2025-0901-This Week’s Moments with Nature

We found a lot of small surprises this week on the farm and during our walks. When you take the time to really notice, there’s always something stirring, blooming, or simply moving by.

Kousa Dogwood Fruit

Look a Phooey’s favorite find — the bright red fruit of the Kousa dogwood.

Dogwood fruit — it looks like a raspberry but tastes sweet and tropical, similar to mango or papaya.

We weren’t the only ones who noticed. A black bear came for a snack too!

Unexpected visitors in the backyard

A family of wild turkey — they darted through the yard, almost too fast to catch.

A white-tailed deer — they can run 30 mph and leap more than three meters high.

Garden wonders and secrets

Grasshopper — They can jump over 20 times their own body length in a single leap.

Tiny carpenter bee — The tinny bees can drill perfectly round holes into wood to build their nests.

Toad — Their skin glands can secrete toxins to deter predators.

Plants in their quiet beauty

Pink rose — their pink symbolize gratitude, and admiration, expressing appreciation in a romantic way.

American burnweed seeds — they look like dandelion parachute. One day they take off, wherever they land, that is the beginning of their next journey.
