Porcelain Berry

This is the last weekend of my summer break. We went biking in Liberty Park, near the Hudson River.

While we were riding, something bright caught our eyes—colorful berries hanging on a vine!

They looked like tiny jewels—some yellow, some pink, some purple, and some shiny blue.

I stopped my bike right away and took some photos. When we got home, mom helped me look them up. That’s how I learned they are called Porcelain berries.

🍇✨ Fun Facts I Learned

  • Porcelain berries are a super climber! They are a woody vine. They use little curly tendrils to climb, reaching 15–20 feet tall!
  • Rainbow berries. The berries aren’t just one color. They can be yellow, purple, pink, turquoise, or blue—like a rainbow on a plant.
  • Travel with birds. Each berry has tiny seeds inside. Birds eat the berries and drop the seeds in new places. That’s how the plant spreads.
  • They pretends to be grapes. Their leaves look a lot like grape leaves—heart-shaped and sometimes with deep cuts.
  • Summer Flowers! From June to August, they make tiny greenish-white flowers in umbrella-shaped bunches.
  • Invasive plants. They grows so fast and thick that it can push out other plants. That’s why it’s called invasive in some place.
  • Super Tough Roots! Even if part of its roots are cut, it can sprout new plants. It’s very strong!
  • Spotted Bark! Its bark has little dots called lenticels that help the plant breathe.
